Volumetric Filling or Flowmeter Filling

How to choose a filling system according to our production, and what differentiates volumetric filling from flowmeter filling.

There are different filling systems used in the industry for liquid, dense and semi-dense products, among which volumetric filling systems and flowmeter filling systems stand out.

At MarCoPack we work with both systems depending on the customer and which one best suits the specific needs of the product and the packaging process.

Let’s look at the differences between the two systems and when it is advisable to use one or the other:

Volumetric filling system

The volumetric filling system is based on measuring the volume of the product to dose and fill the containers. It uses different methods such as cylinders, pistons, peristaltic pumps or rotary discs to control and adjust the volume to be filled in each container. Among its advantages are the following:

  • Accuracy: Volumetric filling systems offer accurate and consistent dosing, making them ideal for products that require precise volume measurement, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food products.
  • Variable viscosity: These systems are suitable for products with different viscosities, as they can be adjusted and adapted to work with low to high viscosity liquids. Such as gels, creams, sauces, etc.
  • Filling flexibility: Volumetric systems can fill a wide range of containers of different shapes and sizes, making them versatile and suitable for a variety of applications.
  • Speed control: They offer the possibility to control the filling speed, which is beneficial when slow filling is required or when working with foamy or hazardous products that may cause splashing.

Flow meter filling system

The flow meter filling system is based on the measurement of the product flow to dose and fill the containers. The flowmeter is a device that measures the flow rate or liquid flow rate, and allows to control and adjust the amount of product to be filled in each container. Some of the characteristics of the flowmeter systems are:
  • High flow accuracy: They are ideal when precise and consistent product dosing is required, especially in applications where tight flow control is needed.
  • Low viscosity products: These systems are suitable for low viscosity liquid products, such as water, aqueous solutions, liquid chemical products, among others, since the flow meter is better adapted to these types of products.
  • Constant filling speed: Flowmeter filling systems offer a constant and controlled filling speed, which makes them ideal when high efficiency in the packaging process and high production are required.
  • Dosing by weight: In some cases, flowmeter filling systems are used to dose products by weight, as flow measurement can provide an accurate estimate of product weight.
  • Wide range of formats and sizes: The flowmeter easily adapts to a wide range of sizes and containers to be filled, offering great versatility in the machine.
It is important to keep in mind that the choice between a volumetric filling system and a flowmeter filling system will depend on the product characteristics, required accuracy, viscosity, filling speed and the specific objectives of the packaging process.
